St Mary lived, in Alexandria, by a combination of begging and spinning flax. Her appetite for sexual pleasure was not that scandalous to much modern thinking. She might have been a total unknown but for the Grace of God. She went to Jerusalem on a whim and famously tried to enter the Church for the elevation of the cross when she found she could not because it was as if there was some barrier preventing her. Her words are recorded as follows:- “The word of salvation gently touched the eyes of my heart and revealed to me that it was my unclean life which barred the entrance to me.” Then came the moment of repentance, she prayed before the…

Isolation and the Christian Life.

In an age when families no longer eat dinner together, children watch TV, play computer games, and text message their friends from their bedrooms; when adults can be seen walking in our cities talking on cell phones; at a time in history when people can be sitting in a cafe with friends, all the while talking to someone else on a mobile phone, we have become a people living together in isolation.

I remember from my youth visiting my elderly grandmother, always finding her radio and TV blasting away. You’d walk into her kitchen and hear a radio, while in the living room you’d find her…

Mother Maria of Paris

I want to talk a little about a very modern woman who lived through revolution and occupation by enemies. In difficulty and danger she followed Christ and did not give way to hate.

The basic back ground to the life of Mother Maria of Paris (St Mary as she is now) is as follows.

She was born in 1891 in Latvia - then Russian.  Her father…

Today we celebrate and wonder at the raising of Lazarus. We know from the Gospels that Lazarus was a close friend of Christ who had spent much time with him, Mary and Martha at their house in Bethany.

We need to recognise that even at this stage of Christ’s ministry there were still elements of doubt in the minds of our Lord’s friends. The full and shocking extent of what was happening was still not quite apparent. The women knew Christ to be the Messiah the Son of the Living God.  The dialogue with Martha is interesting to read.
“Now Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have…

Welcoming Christ into Jerusalem
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, God is one.

This icon is known as “The Entry into Jerusalem”; and Jesus is coming from the village at the Mount of Olives, down the hill, toward the city of Jerusalem, riding a young donkey. There are lots of adults crowding around to welcome Our Lord, but what is striking about this icon is how active the children are. In the front of the icon, lots of children are spreading palm leaves in front of Christ as a sign of victory, to welcome Him. Three more children have climbed high up the palm tree to gather more palm leaves.…
