What he finds is that such an interpretation fails on two counts: It does not fit with the context of the passage, and it fails to understand the verses in the comprehensive light of scripture.

Taft, S.J. presented the keynote address at an international academic symposium titled “The Past and Future of Liturgical Theology: Celebrating the Legacy of Father Alexander Schmemann,” held at St. Vladimir’s Seminary (SVS), this past weekend.
