New Podcasts

Posted by Bobby · Thursday, April 10, 2014

Just a quick post to tell you about some of the many new podcasts that we are currently developing. First up is "The Life of Faith: Orthodoxy in the Modern World" with Fr. Vassilios Papavassiliou, which should debut sometime today. In it, Fr. Vassilios, a priest of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain, will present a series of reflections and commentaries on Orthodox life, faith, and theology. Likewise in development is "Orthodoxy Behind Bars: Updates and Reflections on the Orthodox Christian Prison Ministry," which will of course be hosted by OCPM. This podcast will consist mainly of interviews regarding the ways in which the Orthodox Church is ministering to those in prison. And then there is the self-explanatory "Ancient Paths: Sermons and Meditations to Challenge, Inspire, and Transform" with Fr. James Guirguis, the priest at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in New Hartford, New York. There are several other podcasts being developed as well—and more video podcasts!—but they are too early in the process to announce. Here's the cover art for "The Life of Faith."

Improved Search Function Coming Soon!

Posted by Bobby · Thursday, March 27, 2014

Presvytera Magda Andronache, her husband Fr. Peter, and their three children (a fourth on the way!) visited the AFR studios yesterday while en route from their home in Iowa to the St. Emmelia’s Homeschooling Conference, which is being held at Antiochian Vilage in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. Presv. Magda has been assisting us with our new website, performing the painstaking job of adding tags and categories to every single podcast episode (over 15,000 and counting). Once she is finished, our site will have a new dropdown search tree that will allow you to find podcast episodes on exactly the topics you are looking for. It will also feature a refined search function that will be capable of more accurate and nuanced results. According to our recent listener survey, which so many of you participated in (thanks, by the way!), this is one of the key areas that you want to see improved on the new AFR website. We agree that with so many podcasts and episodes, it is becoming more and more difficult to navigate through the site and locate desired content. Presv. Magda's work should go a long way toward eliminating this problem, making your searching a swifter and more elegant process. Here's a picture of Presv. Magda. We are so thankful for her hard work and wish her safe travels!

Christ the Savior Orthodox Church in Chicago

Posted by Bobby · Friday, March 14, 2014

We have finally settled on the Orthodox parish from which we will broadcast live Divine Liturgies. It is Christ the Savior Orthodox Church (OCA) in the heart of Chicago. The building is absolutely gorgeous (not that this matters for radio), the choir is excellent, the acoustics are wonderful, and Fr. John Baker is eager and excited to make this happen.

Here is a picture of the outside of the church:

And here is the interior:

This parish just made all the sense in the world. We are only 50 miles from Chicago, so it's close enough for us to monitor the setup and the broadcasts; this is my former home parish, and so I know Fr. John very, very well; it has the funds needed for all of the equipment (we're splitting the costs with them); and did I mention that choir?

If we're going to do this thing, we're going to do it right, and Christ the Savior Orthodox Church understands that and agrees. All that's left now is to purchase and install the equipment. Stay tuned here for more updates. As you may be able to tell, I'm just a little excited about this development.
