Prayer to the Saints - Part 4: The State of the Dead

PRAYER TO SAINTS IV

  1. Warnings by the Church Canons Council of Nicea 787AD. God and the saints are addressed differently. We implore God to grant us blessings and deliver us from evil, we implore the saints to intercede for us to God who grants the petitions. Therefore we pray to God: Have mercy on us, and to the saints, Pray for us. It is strictly incumbent on all to beware lest they transfer to any creature the rights which belong strictly to the Deity. We do not adore any creature nor honor the saints as though to adore them, but…

Prayer to the Saints - Part 3: The State of the Dead

PRAYER TO SAINTS III

  1. Status of the dead: What is "death"? It is not annihilation or unconciousness. Death is the separation of things that should be together, body and soul, the soul and God. Death is separation. The Old Testament uses the term "cut off" as a euphemism for putting someone to death. "Eternal life" is NOT mere immortality, (the demons are immortal), but it is being connected to our "True Life" who is Christ.
    1. The "dead" are not dead. Luke 9:28-31 Transfiguration, Moses and Elijah talking to Jesus…

  2. Theological argument: Communion in Christ is what we are created for.
  3. Why does God command us to pray for one another if we can pray to God on our own, for ourselves and we need no one else but Jesus?
    a. The REAL QUESTION is not "why intercession of the…

Prayer to the Saints - Part 1: What is a Saint?

PRAYER TO THE SAINTS PART I

  1. What is a Saint?
    1. All Christians are "saints", or "holy ones" (literal translation), which means "set apart". All believers are holy ones in the sense of a status which is given to us by virtue of our baptism into Christ and receiving the Holy Spirit. But on the other hand we are called to be "sanctified" or "holy-ized" which is a work in progress, or a "state of being" which we strive for by eliminating sin and conforming ourselves to the image of Christ. We are commanded to "cleanse…

Tremors of Doubt
What kind of God would allow a deadly tsunami?

BY DAVID B. HART
Friday, December 31, 2004 12:01 a.m. EST

On Nov. 1, 1755, a great earthquake struck offshore of Lisbon. In that city alone, some 60,000 perished, first from the tremors, then from the massive tsunami that arrived half an hour later. Fires consumed…
