There’s a saying that Orthodox Christianity is the “best-kept secret” in North America. But should our faith be so unknown to the people around us?

St. Romanos the Melodist tells us to imitate St. Photini, the Samartian woman, and share our faith:

You were not worthy of having what you possess and what you keep through the grace of the Giver. Do not hesitate, then, to distribute to those who ask, just as the woman of Samaria once shared. For having drawn from the well by herself, she shared with others what she received. No one asked her, and yet she gave to all ungrudgingly of her free gift.

Pray at Night

Most of us have some type of ritual before going to bed—brushing your teeth, reading the Bible, etc. One thing that must be on our list of nighttime activities is praying to God, as Elder Amphilochios of Patmos says:

Do not neglect evening prayer. Pray with eagerness like those who are going to a feast. They are awake and feel joy alone. Is it a real battle for you to keep your mind from wandering to thoughts and daydreams that you know you shouldn’t entertain? Here’s a prayer from the Orthodox Service Book (Trebnic) to help with this problem:

Chase far from me every filthiness which is superabundance of evil. For Thou alone art holy; Thou alone art mighty; Thou alone art immortal, having unfathomable power against all things; and it is through Thee that every power is given…

Some of us tend to think of our jobs—either inside or outside the home—as something separate from the spiritual life. St. John of Kronstadt, however, tells us that Christ can be directly involved in everything we do:

In all your works, either at home or at the place of your service, do not forget that all your strength, your light and your success are in Christ and His Cross; therefore, do not fail to call upon the Lord before beginning any work, saying: Jesus, help me! Jesus, enlighten me! Thus your heart will be supported and warmed by lively faith and hope in Christ, for His is the power and glory unto ages of ages.

Do You Have Full Faith?

Episode date: December 22, 2010
Transcript published:

Many of us, when we think of faith, think it means to believe what the Church teaches, or to trust God. Both of these are true, but St. Peter of Damascus tells us full faith involves prayerful contemplation:

There is, first, the ordinary faith of all Orthodox Christians, that is to say, correct doctrinal belief concerning God and His creation, both visible and invisible, as the Holy Catholic Church, by God’s grace, has received it; and there is, second, the faith of contemplation or spiritual knowledge, which is not in any way opposed to the first kind of faith; on the contrary, the first gives birth to the second,…
