Grief Over Sins Leads to Comfort

St. Gregory Palamas tells us that grieving over our sins can lead to our being comforted:

Do you see what grief arises in a humble soul and the consolation that ensues: indeed, self-reproach on its own, when lying for a protracted time upon the soul’s thoughts like some intellectual weight, crushes and presses and squeezes out the saving wine that gladdens the heart of man, that is to say, our inner self. This wine is compunction. Together with grief compunction crushes the passions and, having freed the soul from the weight that oppresses it, fills it with blessed joy. That is the reason why Christ says, ‘Blessed…

If I Were a Rich Man… Dadadadada….

It came down to the wire. I was supposed to leave for St. Michael’s to insulate and sheetrock the Abbot’s cell, but with Christmas, all of our kids and the grandchild staying with us for the holidays, the youngest’s 18th birthday bash, and a new daughter-in-law to be to celebrate, our finances got stretched thinner than angel hair pasta.  Fortunately, I picked up a couple last minute jobs that I could collect a daily check so I could afford to buy some winter clothes, pay for gas to get to the Monastery and leave a few dollars for the Wifey to buy groceries and electricity while I was gone.  I should have had my truck checked…

The Cherubim, the Seraphim, and the angels stand with great awe, fear, and joy. They rejoice over the Holy Mysteries while experiencing inexpressible astonishment. The angel who is always by us is consoled, because he also partakes in that dread spectacle and…

Our culture has a certain fondness for the slick hustler who can “pull one over” on others. St. John Climacus, however, warns us of the terrible damage we do to ourselves when we fool others:

Guile is a perversion of honesty, a deluded way of thinking, a lying disposition, false oaths, ambiguous words, a dark secrecy of heart, an abyss of cunning, deceit that has become habit, conceit turned into nature, a foe to humility, a pretense of repentance, an estrangement from mourning, hostility to confession, a teacher of willfulness, a cause of falls…diabolical life.

How to Kick a Bad Habit

Episode date: January 20, 2011
Transcript published:

Most of us have some bad habit that we need to overcome. St. Basil the Great tells us how we can do so:

An illness that has become chronic, like the habit of wrong-doing that has become ingrained is very hard to heal. If after that, as very often happens, the habit turns into second nature, a cure is out of the question. So the ideal would be to have no contact with evil. But there is another possibility: to distance yourself from evil, to run away from it as from a poisonous snake, once you have experienced it…Be careful not to be utterly overcome by it. If the sin is already weighing you down…then before you fall into…
