Taste and See

If you’re like me you love food—I like to cook, and I certainly like to eat good meals. But Lorenzo Scupoli gives us the secret for truly appreciating what we eat:

When you eat or drink, reflect that it is God, Who gives all food a taste which pleases us. So, delighting in Him alone, say: ‘Rejoice, O my soul, for, although you can find no satisfaction, delight or comfort in anything outside God, you can know Him and cleave to Him, and can find every delight in Him alone, as David invites, saying: ‘O taste and see that the Lord is good’’ (Psalm 34:8).

You Can Live Forever

I am in my forties, and for the first time in my life I’m starting to, as the saying goes, “feel my age.” It’s therefore amazing to remember that, as Abba Epiphanios teaches, we can live forever:

We were created for eternal life by our Creator, we are called to it by the word of God, and we are renewed by holy Baptism. And Christ the Son of God came into the world for this, that He should call us and take us there, and He is the one thing needful. For this reason your very first endeavor and care should be to receive it.

St. Romanos the Melodist tells us to imitate St. Photini, the Samartian woman, and share our faith:

You were not worthy of having what you possess and what you keep through the grace of the Giver. Do not hesitate, then, to distribute to those who ask, just as the woman of Samaria once shared. For having drawn from the well by herself, she shared with others what she received. No one asked her, and yet she gave to all ungrudgingly of her free gift.

Most of us have some type of ritual before going to bed—brushing your teeth, reading the Bible, etc. One thing that must be on our list of nighttime activities is praying to God, as Elder Amphilochios of Patmos says:

Do not neglect evening prayer. Pray with eagerness like those who are going to a feast. They are awake and feel joy alone. Thus, since you are going to speak with your Bridegroom, do not listen when the Tempter tells you various things in order to hinder you, because you know there is someone who cares for you.

A Prayer Against Evil Thoughts

Is it a real battle for you to keep your mind from wandering to thoughts and daydreams that you know you shouldn’t entertain? Here’s a prayer from the Orthodox Service Book (Trebnic) to help with this problem:

May those who war against me be put to shame, and may those who seek to separate me from Thee through immodest acts, unseemly thoughts, and unprofitable reflections be turned back. Chase far from me every filthiness which is superabundance of evil. For Thou alone art holy; Thou alone art mighty; Thou alone art immortal, having unfathomable power against all things; and it is through Thee that every power is given…
