Steve the Builder
Homeless, Hungry, God Bless
Episode date: February 20, 2009
It was close to Christmas in 1971. I remember because of the bitter cold, at least bitter for Phoenix and cold enough to freeze to death in. I remember too because I was wearing my new long black overcoat, something you rarely get to do in Phoenix. My friend Randy and I were hanging out as usual at Hobo Joe’s coffee shop after his night shift ended, drinking coffee, righting the world’s injustices, talking about Jesus and watching people, sometimes until dawn. We saw a lot of severe humanity late at night at Hobo Joe’s. Cruising gays, hookers, groups of servicemen, rowdy cowboys, monosyllabic drug addicts, lonely businessmen…

I praise thee O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you hid these things from the wise and intelligent, and revealed them to babes. Matthew 11:25
I was listening to Father Hans Jacobse in his interview with Kevin Allen on “The Illumined Heart” podcast. They were discussing how the Orthodox faith can engage the culture and what kind of apologetics it will take to touch the hearts of the postmodern generation. “Adam was banished from Paradise through disobedience and cast out from delight, beguiled by the words of a woman. Naked he sat outside…
This Is Not A Safe Book
Episode date: March 05, 2009
Every year in Holy Week I read to my congregation an eye-witness account of a certain Paschal night on Solovki Island in 1925. For centuries, this island in the White Sea had been the home of a venerable and very remote monastery. After the Bolshevik revolution in Russia the monks were replaced by political, and especially religious, prisoners. The once beautiful monastery became a concentration camp. The climate of that region was especially harsh and the island well out of sight; thus the newly formed gulag became a place of unspeakable horror for its inhabitants. Few survived here, but among those who did was a prisoner who worked…

The Present Moment
Episode date: March 06, 2009
I read somewhere recently about a person who purposely tried to exercise patience in a parking lot. He waited for pedestrians to cross at the Walmart entrance. He let people turn left in front of him. He let someone take a parking space he had spotted. And it was hard to be patient, even for ten minutes in a parking lot. It was an exercise in “living on purpose” rather than living according to habitual obliviousness to our passions and lack of virtue. The lesson he learned was that awareness to life and our reactions to it is a difficult spiritual discipline.
About 35 years ago I determined to live every moment of…
