How to Become a Healer

Episode date: March 30, 2011
Transcript published:

In the Church we venerate a special class of physician-saints called the Holy Unmercenaries. Ss. Barsanuphius and John tell us what all healers should remember:

While reading medical books or asking someone about them, do not forget that without God no one receives healing. And thus, he who devotes himself to the medical art should give himself over to the Name of God, and God will grant him help. The medical art does not hinder a man from being pious; but make use of it like a handiwork for the benefit of the brethren. Whatever you do, do with the fear of God, and you will be preserved by the prayers of the Saints. Amen.

Whatever a person’s moral standards, there is one thing on which almost all people agree: we cannot stand hypocrisy.

St. John Chrysostom explains:

There is nothing stronger than meekness, nothing more powerful; it preserves our soul in quiet, and strives to lead it as into a harbor, and is the cause of every kind of satisfaction for us; and nothing else can give the soul repose and great quiet as well as meekness and humble mindedness.

Most of us have done things which, while we know them to be sinful, we nonetheless really enjoyed at the time. Lorenzo Scupoli warns us to restrain ourselves from remembering these things:

Not to accept some temptation through one sense or another is easily managed; but it is very difficult to control the imagination and memory of it, once it is accepted…The enemy can play with your soul as with a ball, tossing your attention from one memory to another, stirring up desires and passions beneath them, and so keeping you always in a passionate state. Therefore I say to you: stay awake and, above all, watch imagination and…

Reverend Fathers, My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Before I begin this evening, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the organizers of this event for extending me this invitation to speak to you all tonight: the Winnipeg Orthodox Clergy Association, the entire Community of St. Demetrios Winnipeg, the President and the Parish Council, the Philoptochos Society, and (last but not least) my very good friends Fr. Theodore and Presbytera Joanna Paraskevopoulos for their hospitality and Christian filia.

During my first visit to your city, I saw how beautiful and vibrant your city is. The Greek Orthodox Metropolis had…
