Laypeople Can Be Saints

Episode date: March 27, 2011

Some people think only bishops, clergy and monastics can become saints. This idea is a serious mistake, as St. Niphon tells us:

Whoever says that it is impossible to be saved with a wife and children is a deceiver. Abraham had a wife and children and three hundred and eighteen servants, and also much gold and silver, and he was called the friend of God! Many servants of the Church have been saved, and many lovers of the desert; many aristocrats, and many soldiers; many craftsmen, and many farm laborers. Be devout towards God and loving towards men, and you will be saved.

In the end, whatever our circumstances,…

Are You a Martyr?

Episode date: March 28, 2011

Christians have a special veneration for those who’ve suffered and died for the faith, but Venerable Bede tells us that martyrdom isn’t limited to such specific suffering:

We too, beloved brothers, even if…we do not put up with chains, beatings, prison, other bodily punishments, persecution at the hands of our fellow human beings for righteousness’ sake, nevertheless we are capable of receiving the Savior’s chalice and obtaining the palm of martyrdom if we take care to chastise our bodies and subdue them; if we accustom ourselves to supplicating the Lord in the spirit of humility and with a contrite heart…if…

“He who dies with the most toys wins!” That bumper sticker slogan sums up our culture’s emphasis on getting more and more stuff.

But St. John Chrysostom contrasts this with the angels when he says, “Do not the angels differs from us in this respect, that they do not want so many things as we do? Therefore the less we need, the more we are on our way to them; the more we need, the more we sink down to this perishable life.”

This is why Elder Amphilochios of Patmos says, “Don’t ever pay attention to anything earthly and unstable. Strive for the union of your soul with God.”

How to Become a Healer

Episode date: March 30, 2011
Transcript published:

In the Church we venerate a special class of physician-saints called the Holy Unmercenaries. Ss. Barsanuphius and John tell us what all healers should remember:

While reading medical books or asking someone about them, do not forget that without God no one receives healing. And thus, he who devotes himself to the medical art should give himself over to the Name of God, and God will grant him help. The medical art does not hinder a man from being pious; but make use of it like a handiwork for the benefit of the brethren. Whatever you do, do with the fear of God, and you will be preserved by the prayers of the Saints. Amen.

You Hypocrite!

Episode date: March 21, 2011
Transcript published:

Whatever a person’s moral standards, there is one thing on which almost all people agree: we cannot stand hypocrisy.

St. John Climacus says, “Hypocrisy is the mother of lying, and often its occasion. For some define hypocrisy as none other than meditation on falsehood, and an inventor of falsehood which has a reprehensible oath intertwined with it.”

So how do we rid ourselves of the temptation toward hypocrisy? He answers, “He who has obtained the fear of the Lord has forsaken lying, having within himself an incorruptible judge—his own conscience.”
