On this third Sunday of Great Lent, we are asked to venerate the cross of Christ, that is, to show our great respect and our deep awe for the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified. What does that mean? How do we venerate the cross of Christ?

The reading today from the book of Hebrews, Chapter 4, Verses 15 and 16, explains that Christ sympathises with “our weaknesses”; and it is the reality that Christ first accepts us that can give each of us the courage to then accept Him. It is because of Christ’s acceptance of us with all our weaknesses that we are urged: “Therefore, let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace,…

We revere the saints as very holy people and as intercessors with God on our behalf. They are as near perfect as we might expect. That is right and proper. However, for many of us they seem to be so holy and so exalted we tend to give up the serious business of being like them. What hope have we got, mere normal human beings, of being anything like them? As St Gregory Palamas puts it: - “For the sake of the sublime rewards promised by God, they strove honourably to the limit of human nature and showed us a way of life that was equally sublime.” Problems arise if we see them as so holy that we forget they are men and women like us.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, God is one.
Chapter 9 in the book of Acts and Chapter 1 in the book of Galatians set out how the Jew Saul was guided by Christ to become the Christian Paul. It is a story with which we are familiar—how Saul was struck down on the road to Damascus and then placed his zeal for God, his learning and his energy at the service of Christ. I want to put to you tonight a single idea: what happened to Saul on the road to Damascus can happen to each of us in our own journeys of life, if we are open to receive Christ’s guidance. Let us try to understand how   Saul responded…

Radical Repentance

St Mary lived, in Alexandria, by a combination of begging and spinning flax. Her appetite for sexual pleasure was not that scandalous to much modern thinking. She might have been a total unknown but for the Grace of God. She went to Jerusalem on a whim and famously tried to enter the Church for the elevation of the cross when she found she could not because it was as if there was some barrier preventing her. Her words are recorded as follows:- “The word of salvation gently touched the eyes of my heart and revealed to me that it was my unclean life which barred the entrance to me.” Then came the moment of repentance, she prayed before the…

Mother Maria of Paris

I want to talk a little about a very modern woman who lived through revolution and occupation by enemies. She showed Christ throughout.  Part of her attraction is that she is modern and lived in the West, but, apart from the fact she is a wonderful example, I cannot help thinking of her in a situation where our brothers and sisters are also facing danger in war, even if we call it an uprising. In difficulty and danger she followed Christ and did not give way to hate.

The basic back ground to the life of Mother Maria of Paris (St Mary as she is now) is as follows.

She was born in 1891 in Latvia - then Russian.  Her father…
