At that time, Joseph of Arimathe’a, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. And Pilate wondered if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether Jesus was already dead. And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the body to Joseph. And he bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud, and laid him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. Mary Mag’dalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where…

After our Lord Jesus Christ died, a brave man named Joseph went to Pilate to ask for Jesus’ body. When Pilate was sure that Jesus was dead, he said Joseph could have the body.
Joseph wrapped Jesus’ body with a linen cloth and laid it in a tomb. The tomb was carved out of rock. A big stone was rolled against the door of the tomb.
The next day was the Sabbath, the Jewish day of rest. On the day after the Sabbath, Mary Mag’dalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices to put on Jesus’ body. At that time, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Hebrew called Bethesda which has five porticoes. In these lay a multitude of invalids, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water; for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and troubled the water; whoever stepped in first after the troubling of the water was healed of whatever disease he had.
One man was there, who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him and knew that he had been lying there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” The sick man answered him, “Sir,…

One Sabbath day, our Lord Jesus Christ went to Jerusalem. Near one of the city gates was a pool called Bethesda. Around this pool, many sick people lay, waiting. They were waiting for the water to move! You see, every now and then, an angel would come and make the water move. When that happened, the first person to go into the water was healed! So, the sick people waited and watched for their chance.
One man who was there had been sick for 38 years. When Jesus saw him, he knew the man had been there a long time. He asked the man, “Do you want to be healed?”
The man said, “Yes, I do, but I don’t have anyone to put me into…

Stability of Place and Personal Growth

An elder said, “Just as a tree cannot bear fruit if it is often transplanted, so neither can a monk bear fruit if he frequently changes his abode.” In an age when people change addresses as often as those of past generations changed their socks, stability of place is almost unheard of.

When I was a young man I moved from city to city quite often. One year alone I lived in New York City; Berkley, California; and Portland, Oregon. If I hated a job, I’d move. If my social life was on the rocks, I’d move. Reinventing myself in a new location became the norm. In my attempt to discovery my place in this world, I couldn’t…
