The Lord spoke this parable. “There was a householder who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country.
“When the season of fruit drew near, he sent his servants to tenants, to get his fruit; and the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other servants, more than the first; and the did the same to them. Afterward he sent his son to them, saying, “They will respect my son”
But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, “This is the heir; come, let us kill…

One day, our Lord Jesus Christ came into a village. His friend Martha was there, and she invited Him to come into her house. Martha’s sister, whose name was Mary, was there, too. Mary loved to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to Him when He was teaching people about God and God’s ways, so this time, she sat right there and listened.

Martha was so busy cooking and serving Jesus and the others. She did not think it was fair that Mary just sat there while she worked and worked. She said to Jesus, “Don’t you care that my sister just sits there and listens, and leaves me to do all of the work? Will you please tell her to help me?!?”

One day, our Lord Jesus Christ told a parable, a story with a special meaning, to some of the important leaders in the Hebrew faith. He told them, “Once upon a time, there was a land owner who planted a vineyard. Then, he lent the vineyard to tenants, in exchange for some of the fruit that they would grow there, and he went away.
“When it was time for the fruit to be ready, the land owner sent three servants to the tenants to ask for his fruit. When the tenants saw…

At that time, Jesus’ name had become known, and the King Herod heard of it. Some said, “John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; that is why these powers are at work in him.” But others said, “It is Eli’as.” And others said, “It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” But when Herod heard of it he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.” For Herod had sent and seized John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Hero’di-as, his brother Philip’s wife; because he had married her. For John said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” And Hero’di-as had a grudge against…

One day, King Herod heard about Jesus and the great things he could do.

Some people said that John the baptizer had come back to life. Others thought Jesus was Eli’as. Other people thought he must be another of the prophets.

But not King Herod: when he heard about Jesus and what Hecould do, King Herod was sure that Jesus was John the baptizer, raised to life again. And then he remembered what had happened:

You see, Herod had married his brother Philip’s wife, Herodias. John had told him, “It is not right for you to be married to your brother’s wife.”

This made Herodias angry at John. She wanted to hurt…
