Today we remember St Columba, founder of Iona Monastery.  He is a saint native to the British Isles, yet spent a lot of his life in exile abroad, although still within these islands.  St Columba is a great saint, he has been called an apostle to Scotland.  We are fortunate indeed to have a detailed account of him of him written by St Adamnan - a later abbot of Iona - from records of the monastery.  There are of course other references to him, not least in St Bede’s History.

Iona is a small beautiful Island in Western Scotland. I have been there several times.  It is also curious place, much…

The Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ into heaven is not an isolated occurrence that befits only the Son of God.  It is the promise to all those who are in Christ to ascend in and with Him to glory.  Everything that is His by nature can become ours through grace.  Our Ascension is variously called “deification” or as St. Peter explained, we are thereby to become:- “partakers of the divine nature.” (2 Peter 1:3-4)

At that time, as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them.
Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him. And he went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel…

One day, our Lord Jesus Christ was walking along the Sea of Galilee. He came to two brothers, Simon (called Peter) and Andrew. These brothers were fishermen. They were just casting their net into the sea when Jesus came to them.
He said, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for men!” Right away, Simon Peter and Andrew left their nets and followed Jesus!
As they walked along, Jesus saw two more brothers. James and John were both in a boat with their father, Zebedee. They were fixing their nets so that they could fish again. Jesus called out to invite them to follow Him.
Right away, James and John left the boat and their…
