In the evangelical world, a young and talented team of musicians have become the new hymn writers who are celebrated for providing a much needed antidote to the often shallow and monotonous praise songs that get projected onto screens in contemporary worship services across the country. Keith and Kristyn Getty along with Stewart Townend are the writers and composers of such modern day hymns as “By Faith”, “The Power of the Cross”, and “O Church Arise.” However, their most popular composition is “In Christ Alone” and it is the object of some controversy in the news recently.

When I turned recently to my window on the world (aka “Facebook”), I discovered that the Next Big Noise in the cultural world of the west is a book recently written by Reza Aslan entitled, Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth.  Mr. Aslan, as one might guess by his name, is a Muslim by faith, and, as he repeatedly reminds us in an interview, a scholar and professor by trade.  The interview to which I refer is the one given on Fox Network’s online programme “Spirited Debate”, in which Lauren Green interviewed him about his book (or perhaps I should say “interrogated him”, since she came on so aggressively that…

At that time, Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and he went to the synagogue, as his custom was, on the Sabbath day.

Jesus opened the book and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor and to heal the broken hearted. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
And Jesus closed the book, and gave…

One day, our Lord Jesus Christ came to Nazareth, the town where He lived when He was a boy. Just like He always did on the Sabbath, He went to the synagogue, the place where Jewish people go to worship God. They gave Him the book of the prophet Isaiah, and He stood up to read it to everyone.
He opened the book and read from it. “God’s Spirit is on me, because He wants me to preach good news to poor people and heal people with broken hearts. He sent me to set people free, help blind people to see, lift up people who have been put down, and show people that God is with them.”
After Jesus read this, He closed up the book, gave…

If you compare the Gospels you will find some differences in emphasis and even in the order of events. The Gospels were written to record important truths and evidences of Christ’s identity as the Messiah and as God the Son. Certain details are recalled in some Gospel accounts yet not others. Of course the Gospels are not detailed biographies. It is possible that St Matthew (in the reading today) was recording a well-known story, the details of which were well known. The Apostle does, however, offer his own insights on the narrative. The healing of the paralysed man is reported also in St Mark’s Gospel (chapter 2) and St Luke’s…
