Subduing our Fears
Our Lord Jesus Christ is both Man and God.  Limited in space and time in his earthly showing He nonetheless remained and remains unbounded and infinite in power as Lord over all Creation, Pantocrator.  Usually his divine power was not exercised over nature during his earthly life for in the affairs of men this was rarely necessary, health being the more important need to be met.  Nevertheless, here we see Christ walking on the waves of the sea as if dry land; walking toward the disciples’ boat through the storm. When He gets into the boat all is calm.  Why did He do this?

Maybe the disciples…

There is a double celebration today; the festival of our saint transferred from the end of August and the new year of the Church. Happy New Year would be trite; many of us are worried and concerned for the future. Rather I say may your year be blessed in every way possible.

There is a saying of Christ:  “A prophet is without honour in his own country”. It is proverbial, a version of “familiarity breeds contempt” or “no man is a hero to his valet or his son”. Today on this Afterfeast of the Exaltation of the Holy and Life-giving Cross I am offering a reflection on the teaching of St. Theodore the Studite concerning the death and resurrection of Christ our God.  In a week in which we have witnessed the brutality of a crucifix being used as an instrument of torture in Syria we can venerate the sacrifice of these new martyrs by gaining a deeper understanding of this mystery of our faith – the cross.  St. Theodore begins:

“How precious is the gift of the Cross!
See, how beautiful it is to behold!
It shows no sign of evil mixed with good, like the tree of old in Eden;

We are now early in the Church year and it is very appropriate at this time of beginnings to consider the calling of the disciples. Tradition calls St Andrew the “first-called”. The title and description of “first-called” comes from St John’s Gospel where St Andrew recognises Christ as the Messiah before Simon Peter does.

The story we heard today from St Luke’s Gospel comes after Christ’s baptism and temptation in the desert.  St Luke’s version differs from St John’s Gospel in some details. It is clear that the writers had to edit and compress events.  That need not detain us because there…
