In the epistle for today St Paul says to the Corinthians and to us: “In your faith you are standing firm.” What does it mean to stand firm in our faith in Christ? Why is St Paul now so confident that the Christians in the very secular city of Corinth have learned to stand firm in their faith in Christ?

We are not very sure about what was happening in Corinth about the year A.D. 55 when St. Paul wrote this letter; and we will never know precisely what happened. Someone in the Corinth community had done something wrong, something inappropriate for a Christian to do; but it is not clear who the particular sinner was or what he or she…

6 For it is the God who commanded Light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
This opening verse from the Apostle today urges us to look straight in the face of Jesus Christ and there to see the glory of God. We are enlightened, therefore we see and what we see is the same glorious Light which is Christ, as the Creed has it the True…

In the Epistle for today from the closing verses of Chapter 6 of the Second Letter to the Corinthians, St Paul gives us a challenge and a promise. He challenges us to change how we are living; and he promises us that if we separate ourselves from idols, God will be loving and gentle and care for us with great mercy. St Paul is trying to communicate to us a single idea—that, in his words, “we are the temple of the living God.”  In other words, we should be committed primarily to God, and not to something that is simply a personal desire within us, but not from God.

St Paul is very sure that this idea is quite important and…

Today’s reading from the Gospel concerns one of Christ’s healings. The woman with the issue of blood is rightly famous. Much is made by some commentators of the fact that in Jewish law she would be ritually unclean. Indeed we still have traditions about blood in many parts of the Orthodox Church.  It is the reason why women between puberty and the menopause do not enter the altar. It must also be said that a priest with an open cut would also not serve at the Liturgy, at least in some churches. In Antioch, however, these rules do not extend to women absenting themselves from Church after the birth of children or to not receiving Holy…
