Today on this Afterfeast of the Exaltation of the Holy and Life-giving Cross I am offering a reflection on the teaching of St. Theodore the Studite concerning the death and resurrection of Christ our God.  In a week in which we have witnessed the brutality of a crucifix being used as an instrument of torture in Syria we can venerate the sacrifice of these new martyrs by gaining a deeper understanding of this mystery of our faith – the cross.  St. Theodore begins:

“How precious is the gift of the Cross!
See, how beautiful it is to behold!
It shows no sign of evil mixed with good, like the tree of old in Eden;

We are now early in the Church year and it is very appropriate at this time of beginnings to consider the calling of the disciples. Tradition calls St Andrew the “first-called”. The title and description of “first-called” comes from St John’s Gospel where St Andrew recognises Christ as the Messiah before Simon Peter does.

The story we heard today from St Luke’s Gospel comes after Christ’s baptism and temptation in the desert.  St Luke’s version differs from St John’s Gospel in some details. It is clear that the writers had to edit and compress events.  That need not detain us because there…

We are not very sure about what was happening in Corinth about the year A.D. 55 when St. Paul wrote this letter; and we will never know precisely what happened. Someone in the Corinth community had done something wrong, something inappropriate for a Christian to do; but it is not clear who the particular sinner was or what he or she…

6 For it is the God who commanded Light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
This opening verse from the Apostle today urges us to look straight in the face of Jesus Christ and there to see the glory of God. The Light in our hearts is the same Light that brought creation into being. It is the same Light that shines in the face of Jesus Christ. Therefore, when we look upon the face of Jesus, Light responds to Light. We are enlightened, therefore we see and what we see is the same glorious Light which is Christ, as the Creed has it the True…

Humor Me

There is a story of a famous evangelist who arrived in a small town and needed to post a letter. He asked a boy in the street to direct him to the post office and got clear directions. Thanking him the evangelist said he was giving a talk that evening about how to get into heaven, would the boy be coming? “I don’t think so” said the boy, “you can’t even find the post office, never mind heaven”.

We use humour to get through life. Sometimes it is a laugh of recognition, but usually we laugh because something is incongruous: it is out of place.  Sometimes things are funny because they are not what we expect. …
