In the Apostle set for today we read the following from St. Paul:
“God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creation.”
(Galatians 6:14-15)
St. Paul is writing against a sect in the Church of Galatia that is trying to make Gentile (non Jewish) believers observe all the rules of the Laws of Moses, here specifically circumcision, in order to be saved.  St. Paul, himself a Jewish convert with many Gentile friends and co-workers,…

The Gospel for today from Luke Chapter 18 is about a blind man named Bartimaeus who keeps crying out for help as soon as he hears that the man known among the Jews of Palestine as Jesus of Nazareth is nearby. I sometimes think that I and perhaps others here today—whatever our ages—children, teenagers, adults—also behave that way. As soon as we think that Christ is near us, we begin to cry out to Him, “Have mercy on me”—help me with some particular problem. Often, our families or friends tell us, just what the crowd tells Bartimaeus, “Shut up!” or to be more polite, as the Gospel of Luke phrases it: “Those who led the way…

Be Comforted

Very little is known about the life of Jesus Christ on earth from the time when he was eight days old until when Christ in his late twenties began his public ministry by gathering His disciples. The Gospels tell us only two facts: first, that St. Joseph took the infant Jesus and His mother, All Holy Mary, to Egypt until King Herod died (Mat 2:13-15; 19-23); and second, how the young man, Jesus Christ, stayed behind in the Temple precincts during a Passover Festival (Luke 2:41-52). The first story is clearly very important, because the life of the infant Jesus Christ was at risk unless He left Bethlehem for Egypt. But why is this second story…

Be Prepared

I never joined the Scouts when I was young or any other uniformed organisation for young people. That was a shame really because these organisations do a lot of very good work with children building confidence, practical skills and social responsibility. You may know that the motto of the Scouts and indeed the Guides has always been: “be prepared.” Good preparation is everything when it comes to achieving an important goal.

This is no less true in the Scriptures where God’s dealing with humankind involves extensive preparatory work with key people, sometimes over centuries. Today is the Sunday of the Holy Forefathers when we remember…
