The events of the Baptism of Christ are recalled every year in early January as part of the cycle of the calendar which commemorate various events and people from the life of the Christ and history of the Church. This is useful for us, as we may ponder on aspects of the faith and learn from them.  Festivals show eternal realities, not least the work of God in establishing loving relationships with humanity. The whole of salvation is part of God’s eternal plan to renew and perfect the cosmos.

It is no surprise then that the Baptism of Christ is foretold, at least in part, by prophecy. Certainly we have the Baptist and Forerunner…

The comedian Groucho Marx once quipped: “Marriage is a wonderful institution, but who wants to live in an institution?”  Let’s change that to “church.”  It now reads and just as funny: “The Church is a wonderful institution, but who wants to live in an institution?”  We know that these are funny because instinctively we know that neither the Church nor marriage is a formal society, an institution.  We could say that both are organisms rather than organisations.  Marriage is an organism because it is the union in one flesh of two persons.  It reflects the fact that each partner is a living organism. …

My wife suggested that now, in late January, instead of wishing friends a happy Christmas for 2013, it was more appropriate to send cards that read: “Best wishes for a warm Spring in 2014.” She could have added: “Best wishes for a Lent filled with purpose” or “Best wishes for a joyful Pascha.” However, during the last few days I have tackled this problem. For all those people whom I never see I have sent a single 2013 Christmas letter by email; and for those who do not have emails, I am, as the saying goes, “working on it.”

The gospel and epistle for today…

Today marks the beginning of the Triodion which is a service book used throughout the great fast. Today of course is not the beginning of Great Lent but we are starting to prepare for this spring clean of the soul. Right at the very beginning, therefore, the Church in her wisdom puts before us the famous parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector. She does this because this particular parable, perhaps above all others, teaches us precisely how we should start, maintain and end our Christian lives. In short we could summarise this as: “shun pride, embrace humility.”  This is how St. Theophylact explains the matter:-
“Pride…
