FORGIVENESS SUNDAY HOMILY
FR JOHN PARKER

If anyone be devout and love God,
Let him commence this radiant fast with joy!
If anyone be a wise servant,
Let him, rejoicing, enter into the school of repentance.

We who have wallowed long in sin,
Let us now begin our return.
If anyone has strayed from the first hour,
Let him today repent with zeal.
If anyone has sinned from the third hour,
Let him with gratitude embrace the fast.
If anyone has fled God from the sixth hour,
Let him have no misgivings about his prompt return;
Because he shall in nowise…

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Glory to Jesus Christ!

“Fasting is a medicine. But medicine, as beneficial as it is, becomes useless because of the inexperience of the user. He has to know the appropriate time that the medicine should be taken and the right amount of medicine and the condition of…

How to Endure Lent and Beyond

As we begin the Holy Fast of Great Lent, we are once again this year confronted with seven weeks (including Holy Week) of reflection, prayer and action.  What does it mean for each of us to be followers of Jesus Christ who suffered on earth, died on the cross, and was resurrected and ascended into heaven? That is our journey, too—suffering, death and eternal life with Christ in heaven. How can we face whatever suffering God is permitting us to experience, whatever pattern of death we must face, whatever conclusion awaits us after death? HOW can we endure all of this?

We endure because just as the Holy Eucharist we have just received…

Christianity is unique amongst the world religions. This is mainly because of our experience of God as personal and, in the Incarnation, material. The symbol of our faith, the creed starts “I believe in God, the Father Almighty who created Heaven and earth and all things, visible and invisible.” Many outside the Church did and do accept the idea of a God; and even the idea of a God who created everything; although some religions have seen deities as merely supernatural beings who have particular influences or powers over certain aspects of life or activity; Poseidon god of the sea for instance. One God who made everything is an advance…
