Are You a Martyr?
March 28, 2011 Length: 1:01
Venerable Bede on the martyrdom of disciplining our bodies and minds.
Christians have a special veneration for those who’ve suffered and died for the faith, but Venerable Bede tells us that martyrdom isn’t limited to such specific suffering:
We too, beloved brothers, even if…we do not put up with chains, beatings, prison, other bodily punishments, persecution at the hands of our fellow human beings for righteousness’ sake, nevertheless we are capable of receiving the Savior’s chalice and obtaining the palm of martyrdom if we take care to chastise our bodies and subdue them; if we accustom ourselves to supplicating the Lord in the spirit of humility and with a contrite heart…if we exert ourselves to be adorned with the virtue of patience and also with the fruits of good works.
"Just wanted to drop you a quick line to let you know that I very much enjoy Ancient Faith Radio and have it on in my office. I am a Roman Catholic priest in Little Rock, Arkansas, and as we have few Orthodox and East Rite Catholics here, I do enjoy listening to the prayers and liturgy from Ancient Faith. Thank you."
