On June 30, 2012, with the blessing of Archbishop Joseph of the Antiochian Diocese of Los Angeles and the West, St. Luke Orthodox Church in Garden Grove, California, hosted a seminar titled “The World Below: Engaging the Hearts and Minds of Today’s Teens.” The goal of the seminar was to open dialogue on the current state of the American teenage world, the sociological and philosophical shifts that have made it a reality, the landscape of American teenagers’ faith, and how the Church ought to respond.
Speakers included Fr. Patrick O’Grady, Pastor of St. Peter Orthodox Church in Pomona, California; David Paddison, a Psychology student and youth worker; and Christian Gonzalez, the Southern California Deanery Youth Director.
Fr Patrick O'Grady, following the ideas of Elder Porphyrios, lays out a vision for how the Church can realign its commitment to the young, emphasizing the need for approaching young through shared humanity and humility. Fr Patrick emphasizes the need for respect and patience in dealing with the young.
