Don’t Play Favorites

Episode date:
Transcript published:

When we play favorites based on attributes over which someone has no control, we do the opposite of honoring the image of God in every person. When we dishonor the image of God in one another, we also diminish our ability to recognize the image of God in ourselves.

Here are eight scientifically proven benefits in being beautiful. Are you ready?

Number one: You are thought of as being healthier if you are beautiful. Number two: Science shows you actually are healthier if you are perceived as being beautiful. Number three: It is easier for you to find a mate. Number four: You are thought to be more intelligent. Number five: You are thought to be more persuasive. Number six: Companies with good-looking executives have higher…

The Zeal of Faith

Episode date:
Transcript published:

The Fathers tell us that it is only the coal that gets separated from the fire that goes cold and dark. Why not let the after-glow of precious Pascha that makes this Bright Week so wonderful, so precious, so warm, warm the faith of your heart to the point where your whole life is warmed by a renewed devotion and zeal for the Lord's house.

Christ is Risen!

“What would Jesus do?” I remember that phrase that was popular a few years ago. I confess to being a bit amused by this fad of “easy religion.” One of the main reasons was that the life of Jesus is not easily categorized as the comfortable Jesus we moderns many times prefer. You know the Jesus I"m talking about, don’t you: the meek Jesus that pats everybody on the head and tells them that they"re OK “just…

Why Are You Hiding?

Episode date:
Transcript published:

“Get out of the way!” My daughter is in the back seat, yelling at the cars in front of us as we were on our way to her dance class. She was frustrated at the amount of traffic in front of us and reacted like she had seen someone else react in the same situation. And, no, I’m not going to say who that “someone” was, because I have a right not to incriminate myself! [Laughter]

But that frustration is so familiar to all of…

He’s Not On Our Team!

Episode date:
Transcript published:

I remember as a boy dreading recess time at school. You see, I was a bit of a bookworm and not very athletic, and so when it came to be picked for teams, I was usually the kid who got picked last. Ugh! I hated that. It was embarrassing and it made me feel like a loser! Well, of course, when report card time came, all the jocks wished they were me! [Laughter]

We humans really do like to pick sides, don’t we? We find it easier to think of “groups”…

What Do You Desire?

Episode date:
Transcript published:

I stood in line for what seemed like hours, but my friends and I wanted tickets to this concert. I mean we really want them. We wanted them so bad that we were standing outside for hours, missing other events, and even getting a little hungry. That didn’t even stop us from doing what we had to do to get those tickets. And we did, and it was a great show.

It really is amazing what price we humans are willing to pay to get what we really want.…

I Am The Door

Episode date:
Transcript published:

Thresholds are funny things. American businessman Joseph B. Wirthlin once said, “Those who stand at the threshold of life always waiting for the right time to change are like the man who stands at the bank of a river waiting for the water pass so he can cross on dry land.” Thresholds mark places where we are moving from once place to another. Now think about a threshold with a door! Now we are talking about mystery as well as passage from one place to…

Render to Caesar

Episode date:
Transcript published:

NASA recently released the largest picture ever taken. It’s made up of 411 snapshots from the Hubble telescope of our nearest neighbor, the Andromeda galaxy. The picture is 1.5 billion pixels and takes 4.5 Gigs of disk space to load. It’s big, but as large as the picture is, the scene it shows is even more incredible. It shows over 100 million stars and looks 40,000 light-years away from us. It’s breath-taking! Fascinating information, and, much…

Hey, That’s Against the Rules

Episode date:
Transcript published:

What’s the difference in rule-keeping and wisdom? Turns out, this distinction is the most important change of mind we humans have to face if we’re ever going to be able to embrace the message of the Orthodox Christian faith. As a former police officer, I remember well having to memorize the rules of the road so that I could enforce the rules. Of course, all these laws were on the books for people’s safety, but I can’t tell you how tempting…

Getting Back What You Gave Away

Episode date:
Transcript published:

You remember this, don’t you? “If you love something, set it free. If it comes back to you, it’s yours forever. If it doesn’t come back, it never was.” Well, I find this sentiment a bit saccharine for my taste. I do tend to have a deep suspicion of sentiment since I’m convinced it’s more akin to emotional candy than actually helpful to my spiritual life. There is an element here worth exploring. We really do need to learn…

Unforgivable

Episode date:
Transcript published:

There’s a popular TV show on American television now—on PBS, no less—called Downton Abbey, and that’s a bit surprising to me, since we Americans always seem to be gripped, at least in our rhetoric, with the notion of egalitarianism: we’re all equal. But this popular show is all about the clear stratification of classes and the drama of etiquette and class. In that society, a violation of what’s acceptable can be an unforgivable…
