The Love of Truth as the Key to Salvation

Episode date:
Transcript published:

Fr. Peter reminds us of the essentials and the criterion of salvation; neither a moral life, nor a "religious life," nor love of "man" will save us. Rather, salvation comes to those who love the Truth and give their life for Him.

What is the essence, the center of our Christian life? Throughout our day; throughout our life, it’s very easy for us to become distracted, to focus on things that are secondary, even worldly, and to confuse them for the essence and the purpose of our Christian life. In today’s podcast, I’d like to try to help us all focus on the center of our Christian life, the central message of the Gospel, and the purpose, and the key criterion of salvation for…

Sainthood

Episode date:
Transcript published:

In this podcast, Fr. Peter takes a short break from his series on life in Greece to address a question raised by a listener in Moscow: Why did Fr. Peter refer to Fr. Daniel Sysoev as a "New Martyr" when he has yet to be officially declared one by the hierarchy of the Church of Russia? Fr. Peter takes this opportunity to briefly address the issue of authority in the Church and who it is that first and foremost recognizes the holiness of the saints—the people or the hierarchy?

In this program we are going to take a short break from our new series on life in Greece, and we will continue in the next program talking a little bit about Great Lent and the approaching Holy Week.

In this program I want to answer an inquiry from one of our listeners, in particular, a listener from Moscow, who asked a question and made some inquiries about our use of the title “New Martyr,” for Fr. Daniel Sysoev: the New Martyr Father Daniel.…

Over the last ten years, a great interest has arisen in Greece in the writing and life of America's own Fr. Seraphim Rose.

One of the goals and purposes of this program, Postcards from Greece, is to communicate to you, our brothers and sisters in America and abroad in the English-speaking world, the experiences, insights, and spiritual lessons that we’ve been witness to and blessed with over our ten years here in Greece. One of those developments that certainly has been of great benefit to me personally, but also is of great interest to our Church in America and North America,…

Well, it’s been quite some time since we last spoke, and I want to ask forgiveness from all of you for the great delay in responding to your call for another postcard. I make a prostration before all of you and ask you to pray that such a delay will not again occur soon.

In today’s program, we are going to address an issue that has been in the news around the world, and of course in America as well—that is, the crisis that Greece is going…

The Uncreated Grace That Is God

Episode date:
Transcript published:

Fr. Peter continues to set the stage for his new podcast focusing on the Grace of God at work in the land of Greece.

In our previous program we succinctly laid out the path we planned to follow and our purpose in sending you these postcards from Greece. We said we will center our attention on that which gives Greece her life and vitality—the experience of the grace of God as it has been and is still today lived out in the church here.

But before we delve into particular examples of the expression of the grace of God, it would be best if we spent this time together exploring…

Phyletism - Part Two

Episode date:
Transcript published:

Fr. Peter explains how phyletism undermines the catholicity of the Church.

In our previous program, we discussed the whole question of phyletism, and we’re going to continue our discussion today. We are going to look at how phyletism undermines the catholicity of the Church. If you’ll remember we talked about what phyletism is and is not. We also said that phyletism is a heresy, and it is a heresy which undermines the faith of the Church—our faith in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. In particular, it undermines…

Phyletism

Episode date:
Transcript published:

Fr. Peter explains the heresy of Phyletism, which means placing one's ethnic identity above the Orthodox faith.

In The Symbol of Faith, which the Orthodox Christian confesses at every Divine Liturgy, and in which he confesses his faith in the Holy Trinity, he also confesses his faith in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. And it is this dogma, this faith, of the Orthodox Christian, which in our day and age is perhaps, more than any other aspect of our faith, under attack, or just plainly misunderstood, misapplied, and in great need of clarification.

We as pastors,…
