In a small parish church in the Scottish lowlands stands a stone cross eighteen feet high, carved around the year 700, and up its sides, among the vine-scrolls and birds, someone has cut runes runes that hearken back to one of the oldest surviving English poems. This podcast is called The Great Rood Screen — rood is the old English word for the Cross — and in this episode, at last, Dcn.
