Some Roman Catholics Claim the Orthodox Actually Believe in Purgatory... Is This True?
Wednesday, October 28, 2026
Orthodoxy does not teach the popular Protestant idea of instantaneous entrance into heaven after death. We do believe in prayer for the dead, and even potential delays on the journey of the soul in the afterlife. Does this mean we teach the Roman Catholic doctrine of purgatory?

About
In this podcast, host Cassian King engages those outside the Orthodox Faith—and helps faithful listeners learn how to do so as well—through the use of apologetics. Apologetics, simply put, means giving a reason, defense, or explanation for your beliefs. Christians have a long history of using this technique, as 1 Peter 3:15 says, “Always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you.” With respect and in a spirit of humility, this show creates a defense for the Scriptures, Church Fathers, and dogmatics, as well as for the beauty, truth, and sacramental nature of the Faith, while also engaging with current cultural issues.
