Philip Ludwell III is America’s first known convert to the Orthodox Church. He was received on December 31, 1738, fifty-six years before the first Russian missionary clergy arrived in Alaska. An historic event took place on March 20, 2015 at St. John the Baptist Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Washington DC when perhaps the earliest English translation of the Orthodox lenten liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts was celebrated. Rdr. Nicholas Chapman introduces and gives a background to this translation by Col. Ludwell.
