Jesus - Sin and Curse

Episode date:
Transcript published:

The Son of God became the Son of Man and was "made sin" according to the Scriptures. What should we understand about this way of speaking of Jesus?

In our reflections on the names and the titles of Jesus, we have reflected on Jesus as the Righteous One, the Holy One of God, the Beloved, the Chosen, and certainly as God’s Son, and even as God himself in human flesh, the Logos of God incarnate. We also reflected on Jesus as the Suffering Servant, the one upon whom the Lord places all the sins of the world, who bears our iniquities, who carries our diseases, who suffers our sufferings, who is completely and…

Jesus - The Holy One of God

Episode date:
Transcript published:

In his continuing series on the Names of Jesus, Fr. Tom Hopko explores Jesus as the Holy One of God.

Among the many names and titles of Jesus that we find in the Scripture, we find the expression that Jesus is the Holy One, or the Holy One of God. Being the Beloved, being the Chosen, being the Firstborn, being the Only-begotten, being the Son of God’s love, Jesus is also the Holy One and the Holy One of God.

When we read the Holy Scripture, we find this affirmation made by the demons. It’s very interesting that in St. Mark’s Gospel……

Jesus - The Heir

Episode date:
Transcript published:

In this next episode of The Names of Jesus, Fr. Tom talks about the inheritance that God promises to his people that comes to us through Christ.

As we continue our meditations on the names and titles for Jesus found in Holy Scripture, and of course used in the Church’s liturgy and the Church’s prayer, we want to think today about the teaching that Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of God, is the Heir; that the inheritance that God promises to his people, [comes] to his people through Christ; that as the Firstborn, as the only Son, that he is the Heir of everything that belongs to God. As we hear in the…

Jesus - The Firstfruit

Episode date:
Transcript published:

In a previous episode, Fr. Tom talked about Jesus as the "Firstborn," but there is another similar image in Scripture that describes Jesus as the "Firstfruit."

In our reflections on the names and titles of Jesus, we already reflected a bit about Jesus as the Firstborn—the firstborn of creation, the firstborn from among the dead—and we reflected about how the firstborn is, according to the Scripture, offered to God, that there is the law of offering the firstborn. Then we saw also how God makes the son of David the firstborn, and the firstborn is the heir; the firstborn is the one who receives everything. SO you…

Jesus - The Bridegroom

Episode date:
Transcript published:

This week we will hear a lot about the Bridegroom in our Holy Week services. Who is this Bridegroom and what is the significance of that title?

When we read the Holy Scriptures, we see that one of the earliest names and titles given to Jesus in the Gospel of St. Mark and the Gospel of St. John is when Jesus is referred to as the Bridegroom. This is not unusual or unexpected, because, as we will see here in a minute, the imagery [is used] of Yahweh the Lord and Israel his people as a husband and a wife, a bridegroom and a bride. You could even expand that to the relationship of God to his creation, and then…

Jesus - The Chosen and Beloved

Episode date:
Transcript published:

In his continuing series on the names of Jesus, Fr. Thomas looks at the meaning behind the scriptural references to God's chosen ones through whom came God's Chosen One.

We continue now with our reflections on the names and titles of Jesus found in the New Testament, and we’re going to reflect now on the fact that in the Scripture, Jesus, like Israel as a whole in the Old Covenant Scriptures, Jesus is called God’s chosen one and God’s beloved. He’s called the one who is elected and also the one in whom God is well-pleased, or upon whom or in whom is God’s evdokia, God’s good will, God’s…

Jesus - The Firstborn

Episode date:
Transcript published:

What is the significance of the firstborn son in ancient culture and how does that relate to Christ?

In the Holy Scripture, Israel, the Israel of God, is called God’s Firstborn. In Exodus, the fourth chapter of the Book of Exodus, this is what is written:

The Lord said to Moses, “When you go back to Egypt, see that you do before Pharaoh all the wonders which I have put in your power. But I will harden his heart so that he will not let the people go. And you shall say to Pharoah, ‘Thus says the Lord: Israel is my firstborn son.…

Jesus - The Paraclete

Episode date:
Transcript published:

While normally associated with the Holy Spirit, the name Paraclete also refers to Jesus as our Advocate, Comforter, and Counselor.

Continuing now our reflections on the names and titles of Jesus in Holy Scripture, we want to reflect now on the title of Jesus the Paraclete, or the Paraklētos, the Paraclete. When we say “paraclete,” Christians almost always immediately think of the Holy Spirit. If you would probably ask any Christian, “Who is the Paraclete?” The answer would be: “The Paraclete is the Holy Spirit.” And so even in kind of popular language,…

Jesus - The Door

Episode date:
Transcript published:

In John 10, Jesus talks about gates, thieves, and robbers, but he also talks about salvation and abundant life!

As we continue our reflections on the names and titles of Jesus, we have two more of the “I am” sayings that are found in St. John’s Gospel to reflect on. We have already reflected on the fact that Jesus speaks about himself simply as “I am—Egō eimi,” and we mentioned, of course, many times, that this “I am” is the divine name. It’s the name that the Lord God Almighty, the El Shaddai,…

In reflecting on the names and titles of Jesus, we thought a bit about the fact that in the Scripture, Jesus is called “the righteous one”: “We have an advocate before God, Jesus, the righteous, if we have sinned” (I John 2:1), and the servant of the Lord [in] Isaiah: “He is my servant, the righteous one” (Isaiah 53:11). When we’re reflecting on Jesus as the righteous one and on righteousness, I suggested to you listeners…
