How God Gets Our Attention (Mt 15:21-28)

Episode date:
Transcript published:

Though oftentimes it seems God is silent and does not hear our prayers, Fr Thomas reminds us that God is always reaching out to us and uses the circumstances of our life to draw us closer to Him. (Thirty-first Sunday after Pentecost)

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Glory to Jesus Christ! [Glory to him forever!]

Anyone that’s been to my house… I know all of you are always invited, especially during the Paschal season when we have our parish-wide gathering at our home in Moon Township, but at other times, when people have been there, they know that I have a dog. We have a dog, Jax, and Jax is our family companion. In fact, he’s probably…

Beware of Cheap Imitations (2 Cor 4:6-15)

Episode date:
Transcript published:

The American religious scene is full of false teachers preaching a "gospel" that is focused solely on making people feel good about themselves. Fr Thomas reminds us that the truth of Christ promises us God's comfort in suffering, not the absence of suffering in this world. (Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost)

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Glory to Jesus Christ! [Glory to him forever!]

I’m going to tell you a quick story about a very dear friend of mine. When I was in college, I was blessed to have a professor—his name was Dr. Robert Shankovich, and he’s still a very dear friend. I became very close to him. He was at my ordination. He was at the baptism of some of our children. He’s been to this parish…

The Importance of God’s Word (Luke 8:5-15)

Episode date:
Transcript published:

The parable of the soils sets the tone for other parables taught by our Lord. Fr. Thomas reminds us that this parable brilliantly expresses the importance of both hearing and actively receiving the Word of God in us. (Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost)

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Glory to Jesus Christ!

[Response: Glory to him forever!]

Usually I start the sermon with some kind of a story to illustrate the meaning of the gospel, but today Christ himself provides the story for us, and he provides also the interpretation. So instead of kind of looking at the story itself and the meaning and how it applies to us, [I thought] that we would look instead of some…

Get your Face out of your Phone! (Luke 13:10-17)

Episode date:
Transcript published:

Technology has become so pervasive that many people are now enslaved to their smartphones, constantly looking down into them! Fr. Thomas reminds us that, like the woman bent over with a spirit of infirmity, the Lord heals us so that we can look up to see the gift of life in Christ. (22nd Sunday after Pentecost)

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Glory to Jesus Christ!

[Response: Glory to him forever!]

One of the advantages of working downtown during the week is that you get to see all of the lovely sights, as we had Light-up Night this week and you can see all of the beautiful decorations and the buildings and see all of the restaurants. One of my favorite places to go is down to Market Square. There’s a lot of nice…

Touching Christ (John 20:19-31)

Episode date:
Transcript published:

The story of the appearance of Christ to his disciples on the evening of the Resurrection, as well as eight days later, richly demonstrates the importance of gathering together on the Lord's Day - Sunday. Fr. Thomas Soroka reminds us that our gathering together allows us to experience the coming eternal kingdom here and now. (Antipascha - St Thomas Sunday)

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Christ is risen! [Indeed he is risen!] Khristos voskrese! [Vositinu voskrese!] Christ is risen! [Indeed he is risen!]

I always like to share my pet peeves with you, little things that bother me, and one of the things that bother me especially when I’m at work: someone will send out a calendar, or maybe someone will publish a calendar, and they will arrange the calendar—if…

The Narrow Way of the Gospel (Luke 18:18-25)

Episode date:
Transcript published:

The Gospel contains both words of comfort and words of challenge and warning. Fr Tom reminds us not to make the mistake of listening only to messages which comfort us, but to live up to the words that challenge our faith to continue on the difficult way of Christ. (Thirty-fourth Sunday after Pentecost)

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.  Glory to Jesus Christ!

When we read the Gospels, when we read the words of our Lord, we find tremendous comfort in the words.  When God tells us of his promises and he tells us of saving us from sin and death, when he tells us about the promises of eternal life and how glorious his kingdom will be, and we come to church worshiping and thanking him for that and thinking in anticipation…

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen, Christ is risen!

For the two previous Sundays, and including this Sunday now, we have been speaking about how to have a fulfilling spiritual life, and today I want to talk about the gospel in terms of this idea of spiritual sight. Now, you will notice on the bulletin, and you will notice in the official titles of the Sundays, we always say, “This is the Sunday of the healing of the…
