Ministry of Presence: Presented by Fr. John Kowalczyk and Fr. Stephen Powley

Combined, Fr. John and Fr. Stephen have been involved with prison ministry for well over 50 years. From their experiences in this work, they speak on the important concept of "Ministry of Presence" that is truly vital for all Orthodox Christians to understand. This concept is brought to life by the stories they share from their ministries. This presentation was given in Houston as part of an Orthodox Christian Prison Ministry gathering.

Fr. John Kowalczyk is the priest of St. Michael's Church in Jermyn, PA, the Chancellor of the Diocese of Eastern Pennsylvania, a Chaplain at S.C.I. Waymart's Forensic Treatment Centre for over 27 years, teaches at St. Tikhon's Orthodox Seminary, and is the Director of their Field Education Program. Fr. John is a member of the Board of Directors of Orthodox Christian Prison Ministry.

Fr. Stephen Powley is the priest of St. John the Baptist Church in Pueblo, CO and is the Assistant Director of Orthodox Christian Prison Ministry. He served as a Prison Chaplain for almost 26 years until his retirement in August of 2010. During that time he served as a Chaplain in every security level of prison from minimum to maximum.

Theodore of Tarsus: The Syrian Archbishop of Canterbury

On April 5, 2013, Fr. James Early presented a paper at the International Conference on Medieval and Renaissance Thought at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. The topic of Fr. James' paper was "Theodore of Tarsus: The Syrian Archbishop of Canterbury." St. Theodore was the only Archbishop of Canterbury whose native language was Greek and who hailed from Syria. His feast day is September 19 in the Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Anglican Churches.

The St Romanos Chorale takes its name from the Syrian religious poet and hymnographer of the Eastern Orthodox Christian Church, St Romanos, who is considered to be the greatest of the Byzantine melodist-poets. The Chorale is composed of singers from Orthodox Christian churches in the greater Houston area. The music is sung a capella in both Byzantine and Slavonic styles, predominantly in English, but also in Greek, Arabic, and Slavonic. The Chorale has presented beautiful Orthodox Christian music to audiences throughout Texas and neighboring states at venues including major colleges and universities.

Recently, a group of five Antiochian Bishops traveled to Damascus to meet with His Beatitude Ignatius IV, Patriarch of Antioch and all the East about a February 24th decision of the Holy Synod of Antioch affecting the status of the bishops in North America. Following that meeting, Matthew Namee, host of the new podcast American Orthodox History, spent some time talking with His Grace Bishop Basil of the Diocese of Wichita and Mid-America, part of the Self-Ruled Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese in America.
